Subhadram

Subhadram is basically a story about revenge set in the backdrop of a self financing college campus.

In addition to a teenage romance, the film also has a mix of mystery and horror that neither adds to the interests of the plot of the film.

Consider the following aspects of the movie:

[a] it is directed by Sreelal Devaraj for whom it is a launch vehicle
[b] Its lead is played by a group of relative new comers, who are for the first time taking the risk of being in the lead
[c] It is a miss- mash a of a variety of genres, ranging from a campus story to a horror movie, aptly supplied in bulk with all sort of psychological reasoning
[d] It doesn’t contains enough sentiments or humorous sequences to keep you involved
[e] The film didn't have good pre publicity to the extent that it was released in fewer centres with the least capacity

One need not be a box office pundit to predict that this film shall never draw any decent initials from the box office. And exactly that is what happened with the film that opened poorly, leaving the very few attending the screening, dry and sleepy.

The director also wrote the story, which essentially tells a plot in the backdrop of Royal College of Engineering Studies, where the children of the big guns study.

The film opens with four youth, three of them Aishwarya, Thara and Nishanth, the alumni of Royal College, working on a documentary project on 'life and death.' Manu, the group's leader, and the graphic designer of the firm, is attracted to a sculpture of a woman that he founds amidst their work and buys it to his home.

Thereafter, he starts to feels the presence of a lady wherever he goes. He creates an advertisement campaign using the lady's features which lands them into further troubles. All hell breaks loose as they find that the picture bears an uncanny resemblance to a girl named Subhadra who was gang raped in the RCES and had been missing since then.

Dy SP Nandakumar, father of Nishanth and others who were then accused for her missing gets killed one after one, which ignites the interests of Chandrabhanu I P S towards the case.

Chandrabhanu goes on to find out the history of Subhadra , a good looking and intelligent girl who took admission in this college, as she is the daughter of Prof Sethulakshmi, who works in the college as a lecturer.

Within a short time, Subhadra becomes very popular in the campus. Tara, who reined the campus and the art festivals till then, couldn't digest her intrusion into popularity and so, she takes every chance to harass Subhadra whenever she gets one. She with the help from Nishanth, Aiswarya and Paul Alex, creates an well etched plan to rag her brutally, in the campus.

Subhadra decides to fight back and plans to complain to the police, after the incident but, as Tara and her friends are from very affluent families, the police ignore the complaint. Then one day, Subhadra disappears.

As Chandrabahanu starts investigating the case in the new lines, the dimensions of the entire case become more and more complicated which leads to more twists and turns.
In the paper, the plot may look impressive, but on screen it has not much to comment on. The biggest letdown of the flick is the dialogues by Ajayan Ochnthurathu, which has all the clichés ever known in the film world. The director too adds to the woes by sticking to a narration that is below par. More serious is his reluctance to make his new leads to perform at least to the bench mark of a feature film. The first half hour of the film is amateurish, with the only saving grace provided in better angles, frames and visuals by cameraman M D Sukumaran. He has heavily graded the film to give it a surreal look.

Jayakrishnan (Manju Poloru Penkuty fame) who appear as the hero of this film has nothing more to do while dancer Maidhili as Subhadra, Rajan P Dev as Nandakumar and Riyas Khan as Chandrabhanu are on regular roles..

Reghukumar who makes a comeback after a decade to Malayalam film music with the film, has given some good songs, but in average lyrics shot mostly in poor visuals .But he has composed a good title track for the movie which is repeated often through the narratives.

It is evident from the very first frame that the director was more than confused about the project, be it the plot, screenplay, characterization, or the projection of the heroes. So that itself make the attempt a pedestrian film, which can hardly invite mass audiences.
